Healing with Reiki

What is Reiki?

The word "reiki" combines two Japanese expressions: rei, which means "spirit" or "soul," and ki ("energy," or "life force"). So Reiki is actually "spiritually guided life force energy." Ki is known as Mana in Polynesia, as Orenda by the Native American culture, as chi in China, Ruach in Hebrew, Prana in India and Barraka in the Islamic countries.

The act of “lying on of hands” on the human or animal body to comfort and to calm is instinctual.  When experiencing pain, the first thing most people do is put their hands on it. When a child hurts themselves the first thing we do it touch the wound site.

In the attunement process a Reiki healer has had their body’s energy channels opened and cleared of obstructions. S/he then is able to consciously direct the flow of Reiki. This process does not give the receiver anything new – it opens and aligns what was already a part of them.

The basic idea of reiki is that the body has energy channels that help maintain health and proper functioning. Sometimes these meridians become blocked or weakened and pain or disease occurs. A Reiki Practitioner “flows” ki to those blocked or weakened areas and healing occurs.

Some important points:

Reiki is practiced by people of all spiritual backgrounds and beliefs.

Reiki is not limited to any particular religion or philosophy - Atheists are as free to practice Reiki healing as any other group of people.

Reiki can be passed on to people in comas, children, or even to animals.

Anyone can have the Reiki activated in their hands, as it is already a part of us all. (This is called being attuned)

Reiki can be used alone or in conjunction with medical or veterinary treatment. It will not interfere with medications or other procedures – it can actually make them more effective. Reiki speeds healing making the patient more comfortable. For a patient on chemotherapy, reiki supports the positive effects while helping to decrease the negative ones. (Increased effectiveness – decreased nausea)

When a person is ready to start learning Reiki they are asked if they are willing to start learning to practice these five principles. If they are not willing at this time they are asked to wait until they are willing to start the learning process.

1) Just for today, I shall trust – This principle teaches us to let go of worries and to think positively.

2) Just for today, I shall live my life honestly - This principle teaches us not only to be honest with others, but with ourselves also.

3) Just for today, I shall accept my many blessings - We must be able to receive in order for the Universe to give to us. We must be able to give in order to receive – it is the same action in a different direction.

4) Just for today, I shall be at peace - When we radiate peace and love, peace and love is returned to us.

5) Just for today, I shall respect the rights of all life forms - We must honor ALL life and allow everyone to live his/her own truth.
